If automations are new to you, this guide will explain the basics. Automations are powerful tools that save time, keep you organized, and boost your marketing and sales processes.

A quick note before you begin:
  • Avoid editing active automations: Making changes to an active automation can cause unexpected errors. Always set the automation to 'Inactive' before making adjustments.

  • If an automation must remain active: For scenarios like starting contacts at a specific point, consider creating a workaround to avoid disruption.

What are automations?

Automations, also called funnels, are a series of actions triggered by specific conditions you set. These sequences allow you to achieve your goals without manual input once set up.

Why use automations?

  • Time-saving: Set it once and let it run.

  • Organized processes: Manage complex workflows with ease.

  • Improved revenue: Streamline marketing and sales to drive results.

You can create unlimited automations for different purposes, such as:

  • Sending follow-up emails after a purchase.

  • Updating contact fields with new information.

  • Sending perfectly timed messages.

Tip: Keep automations simple and clear. Instead of combining everything into one large automation, build smaller automations that work together.

Getting started with automations

To start an automation, you need to define how contacts enter it using a start trigger.

What is a start trigger?

A start trigger is the gateway to an automation. Contacts enter the automation when specific actions or changes occur, such as adding a tag or filling out a form.

Marketune offers 17 start triggers, including:

  • Tag added/removed

  • Form submission

  • Contact field changes

When setting up a start trigger, you can:

  • Segment your audience: Define which contacts should qualify.

  • Control entry frequency: Decide how many times a contact can go through the automation.

Types of actions in automations

To keep your processes automated, you need to set up actions that contacts perform or experience.

You can place different actions in an automation:

  • Send a message to your contacts

  • Segment your contacts

  • Update contact information

There are four different types of actions that you can add to your automation:

1. Sending options

Send messages like emails or SMS to contacts.

  • Email/SMS: Communicate directly with your audience.

  • Notifications: Get alerted when a contact reaches a specific step.

2. Conditions and workflow

Control the flow of your automation with these actions:

  • Wait: Add delays for perfectly timed messages.

  • If/Else: Create a split based on conditions (e.g., "Tag is Newsletter"). Contacts follow either the YES or NO path.

  • Split: Segment contacts and test which path performs better.

  • Goal: Allow contacts to skip steps once they meet a specific condition.

  • Start/End automation: Move or stop contacts within workflows.

3. Contacts

Keep contact information up to date and make automations more relevant:

  • Add/remove tags.

  • Update custom fields.

  • Subscribe/unsubscribe contacts from lists.

  • Adjust lead scores.

4. CRM (Customer Relationship Management)

This feature is available with Scale and Pro subscriptions (requires a Sales CRM add-on).

  • Automatically update CRM data to keep information accurate and up to date.

Automations in Marketune are a flexible and powerful way to manage your marketing and sales processes. From sending targeted messages to updating contact information, the possibilities are endless.
