How do I create automations?

Creating automations in Marketune is simpler than you might think. In this guide, we’ll walk you through building an automation that sends a welcome email to new subscribers and assigns tags based on their actions. These tags can help segment contacts, gather insights, or trigger new automations.

Important note:
  • Avoid editing active automations: Changes to active automations can cause errors. Always set the automation to 'Inactive' before making adjustments.

  • If an automation must remain active: For cases like starting contacts at a specific point, consider creating a separate solution to avoid interruptions.

Step 1: Create a new automation
  1. Click on 'Automations' in the left-hand menu.

  2. Select 'Create an automated series' at the top right.

  3. Choose 'Start from scratch' and click 'Continue'.

Step 2: Add a start trigger
  1. Select the start trigger 'Subscribes to a list'.

  2. Choose the list (e.g., 'Test List') where contacts should subscribe to begin the automation.

  3. Set the trigger to run 'Once' to prevent contacts from re-entering the automation multiple times.

  4. Click 'Add start' to save.

Step 3: Add an action to send an email
  1. After adding the start trigger, click 'Send an email' in the 'Add a new action' screen.

  2. Enter the email name (this won’t be visible to contacts).

  3. Choose 'Start with a template' to create a new email or save this step to design the email later.

  4. If creating an email now:

    • In the design page, choose the designer and preferred template and click on 'Select'.

    • On the new screen, you can add sender information and subject line (which can be adjusted later).

    • Fill in the details and click 'Continue'.

Step 4: Edit your email
  1. Use the drag-and-drop system to add or modify content blocks from the right-hand menu.

  2. Click on a block to edit options like text, images, or buttons.

  3. To delete a block, click the cogwheel icon and select 'Delete this'.

  4. Once your email is ready, click 'Next' to access the campaign summary.

Step 5: Review the campaign summary

On this page, you can:

  • Edit message name, subject, and sender info.

  • Enable/disable tracking for opens, links, replies, and Google Analytics.

  • Send test emails, preview your email, or run a spam check.

Click 'Complete' when ready in the top right corner of the screen.

Step 6: Add a waiting step
  1. Click the plus sign (+) below the email step and select 'Conditions and workflow' > 'Wait'.

  2. Choose between:

    • Waiting for a specific time (e.g., 7 days).

    • Waiting until a condition is met (e.g., a link is clicked).

  3. If waiting for a condition:

    • Set the condition: 'Actions > Clicked on link > in Test', and choose the specific link. Click on 'Save'.

    • Specify a time limit (e.g., 7 days) for contacts who don’t meet the condition. Click on the dropdown of 'Time limit' and select 'Until'. Then specify the desired time limit and click on 'Save'.

Step 7: Add an 'if/else' action

The automation checks if the contacts have clicked on the link and then splits the contacts into a 'YES' or 'NO' path. Subsequently, the contacts receive a tag based on the action.

  1. Click the plus sign (+) and select 'Conditions and workflow' > 'If/Else'.

  2. Set the condition for the split, e.g.:

    • 'Actions > Clicked on link > Campaign > in Test', and specify the link. Then click on 'Close’.

  3. A split will appear with two paths: YES (condition met) and NO (condition not met)
Add tags based on actions
  • YES path:

    • Click the plus sign (+) under YES, select 'Contacts' > 'Add a tag', and assign a tag (e.g., 'Clicked link in welcome email'). Click 'Close'.

  • NO path:

    • Add another tag for those who opened the email but didn’t click the link (e.g., 'No link click'). For this, we need to add an 'If/Else' action (in the same way as before). We set the condition as follows: 'Action > 'has opened' > 'Campaign' > 'Test'.

Under the 'YES' path, a tag named 'Opened welcome email' is added. Under the 'NO' path, the same can be done, but then you call it 'No interaction welcome email'.

Example outcome

An automation that sends a welcome email when contacts subscribe to a list. It tags contacts based on their actions (e.g., clicking a link or opening the email). These tags can trigger new automations, such as follow-ups for those who clicked the link.
