In this article, you'll find out:
  • What Site Messages are and how they work
  • How to create your first Site Message
  • How to integrate Site Messages into your automation so they display for your Marketune contacts

What is a Site Message?

Site Messages are lightweight notifications that appear directly on your website. Unlike pop-ups or email alerts, these messages will appear only for Marketune contacts (or a specific segment of contacts) and do not display for anonymous visitors.

By default, Site Messages appear as a "First Message" in the bottom-right corner of your website. However, you can customize their position to: Bottom right (default), Bottom left, Top left, or Top right.

Important note: The position setting is global - any changes made will apply to all Site Messages across your website.

When a contact clicks on a Site Message, it automatically expands into a 'Detailed Message' that offers more information or includes a call-to-action. You can customize both the initial message and the expanded detail, providing flexibility to craft engaging, informative, and action-oriented notifications for your contacts.

To ensure Site Messages are displayed to your contacts, you need to have site tracking enabled in your Marketune account. This feature enables Marketune to identify visitors on your website and show personalized Site Messages to the right contacts at the right moment.

Creating a Site Message

Like SMS messages, Site Messages can only be sent as part of an automation workflow. To use them, you’ll need to create a new automation or add them to an existing one.

In the "Send Options" submenu, choose "Send a Website Message," then click "Create a Site Message" to begin setting up your first message.

You can specify where the message will appear—on all pages or restricted to specific ones. To display it on every page, simply use an asterisk (*).

Give your Site Message a clear, descriptive name that’s easy for you and your team to identify. This name is for internal use only and won’t be visible to your contacts. Once named, you’ll be taken to the design editor, where you can customize the content, layout, and appearance to align with your campaign.

Designing the site message

When designing your Site Message, you can seamlessly switch between the 'First Message' and the 'Detailed Message' from the top of the design screen.

The First Message is the initial preview of the site message that appears to your contacts, while the Detailed Message is the expanded version that shows up after a contact clicks on the First Message.

Editing a Site Message is simple. Just click on the text within the Site Message to edit it. You can also add emojis to make it more engaging. The right-side menu offers several formatting options, allowing you to customize the font styles, colors, and layout to align with your brand’s look and feel.

Layout

In the 'Layout' section, you can choose the design format for your Site Message, ensuring it aligns with your branding and message intent.

Available Layout Options

  • Simple – A clean, text-only message.
  • Simple with title – Adds a bold title for emphasis.
  • Simple image – Includes an image alongside your message.
  • Image with title – Combines a title and an image for a more engaging design.

You can update the image in your selected layout by clicking on the image placeholder in the template. From there, choose an image from your existing library or upload a new one.

Theme

In the 'Theme' section, you can personalize the style and appearance of your Site Message, ensuring it blends seamlessly with your website’s design. You can choose between basic, colored, dark stripe:

  • Basic – A clean and simple design.
  • Colored – Adds a highlighted color to enhance visibility.
  • Dark stripe – A sleek, dark-accented style.

Note: If you select 'Colored' or 'Dark Stripe', an additional 'Highlight Color' option will appear in the right menu, allowing you to customize the accent color to match your website.

Initial effect

The 'Initial Effect' determines how the First Message appears when a contact visits your website. You can choose from:

  • Slide In – The message smoothly slides onto the screen.
  • Fade In – The message subtly fades into view.
  • None – No animation; the message appears instantly.

For each effect, you'll see a live preview as you switch between options, helping you choose the most engaging display.

Once you've designed the First Message, click on "Detailed Message" in the top-left corner of the design editor to customize the expanded version that appears when a contact clicks on the message.

Detailed Messages

Detailed Messages provide expanded content when a contact clicks on a Site Message. These messages are larger and come in two display formats, which can be selected using the dropdown menu in the right-hand panel of the editor.

You can display detailed messages in two ways:

  • Pinned Message - Which stays fixed on the right side of the browser and overlays content but remains visible as the user scrolls.
  • Floating Message - Appears as a modal window in the center of the screen. Draws attention without permanently blocking content.

Detailed messages can also be fully customized. You can edit the title and message text, upload an image to enhance the visual appeal, and add a clickable button to drive engagement. Additionally, you can adjust the text and button formatting, including changing the button's style to better match your design.

Sending a Site Message

Site Messages work similarly to SMS or email within an automation workflow. When a contact reaches the 'Site Message' action in the automation, the message is queued for display. The next time the contact visits your website, the queued Site Message will be triggered and shown, depending on whether they land on:

  • Any page on your website (if no specific pages were set).
  • A designated page (if specific URLs were specified when creating the message).

Sending multiple Site Messages

Currently, Site Messages cannot be recalled once they have been sent to a contact. However, this functionality will be available soon. If you make changes to a Site Message after it has been sent, contacts will automatically see the updated version the next time they visit your website.

When a contact receives multiple Site Messages, they will stack vertically on the screen. The messages will remain visible until the contact dismisses them.
